LEO KOTTKE

Leo Kottke

Acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke was born in Athens, Georgia, but left town after a year and a half. Raised in 12 different states, he absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child, flirting with both violin and trombone, before abandoning Stravinsky for the guitar at age 11.

After adding a love for the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt to the music of John Phillip Sousa and Preston Epps, Kottke joined the Navy underage, to be underwater, and eventually lost some hearing shooting at lightbulbs in the Atlantic while serving on the USS Halfbeak, a diesel submarine.

Kottke had previously entered college at the U of Missouri, dropping out after a year to hitchhike across the country to South Carolina, then to New London and into the Navy, with his twelve string. "The trip was not something I enjoyed," he has said, "I was broke and met too many interesting people."

Discharged in 1964, he settled in the Twin Cities area and became a fixture at Minneapolis' Scholar Coffeehouse, which had been home to Bob Dylan and John Koerner. He issued his 1968 recording debut LP Twelve String Blues, recorded on a Viking quarter-inch tape recorder, for the Scholar's tiny Oblivion label. (The label released one other LP by The Langston Hughes Memorial Eclectic Jazz Band.)

After sending tapes to guitarist John Fahey, Kottke was signed to Fahey's Takoma label, releasing what has come to be called the Armadillo record. Fahey and his manager Denny Bruce soon secured a production deal for Kottke with Capitol Records.

Kottke's 1971 major-label debut, "Mudlark," positioned him somewhat uneasily in the singer/songwriter vein, despite his own wishes to remain an instrumental performer. Still, despite arguments with label heads as well as with Bruce, Kottke flourished during his tenure on Capitol, as records like 1972's "Greenhouse" and 1973's live "My Feet Are Smiling" and "Ice Water" found him branching out with guest musicians and honing his guitar technique.

With 1975's Chewing Pine, Kottke reached the U.S. Top 30 for the second time; he also gained an international following thanks to his continuing tours in Europe and Australia.

His collaboration with Phish bassist Mike Gordon, "Clone," caught audiences' attention in 2002. Kottke and Gordon followed with a recording in the Bahamas called "Sixty Six Steps," produced by Leo's old friend and Prince producer David Z.

Kottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from the U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College.

02-24-2019

[more+]

Suicide is an epidemic that takes over 800,000 lives globally every year. In the United States alone there are one million suicide attempts and over 40,000 deaths by suicide every year. Our United States Military is devastatingly impacted with 22 Veterans dying everyday by suicide, and that is an understatement.

Research has shown that for every one suicide death, over 115 people are directly, and secondarily effected and the financial cost of suicide in the US is estimated to be over 40 billion dollars annually. Suicide is global public health crisis that is not receiving the attention it deserves and therefore millions continue to die and the ripple effects of these deaths continue to devastate parents, children, families, friends and communities.

This event, organized by WeCareNAZ and Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy student Tammy Truman will shine light on the reality of this ongoing crisis and highlight effective efforts that are helping people stay well and alive. We hope you'll join us uniting and igniting change that will have a tremendous positive impact on reducing the number of suicides and suicide attempts around the world.

Tammy's story: "On September 21st, 2017 my brother committed suicide leaving behind his six-month-old son. Since this tragic event I have noticed that this has been a recurring issue in society and happens more often then it should. I have noticed a striking amount of teenagers and adults who feel like ending their life would benefit them. My goal for the event is helping the Flagstaff community cope with the ever-growing rate of anxiety, depression, suicide, and mental illness in general. My goal is to reach out to as many people as possible."

FEATURING: FILM PREMIERE OF THE RIPPLE EFFECT

“Suicide: The Ripple Effect” is a feature length documentary film and MOVEMENT, currently in production, focusing on the devastating effects of suicide and the tremendous positive ripple effects of advocacy, inspiration and hope that are helping millions heal & stay alive.

The film highlights the journey of Kevin Hines, who at age 19, attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Today Kevin is a world-renowned mental health advocate, motivational speaker and author who travels the globe spreading a message of hope, recovery and wellness.

The film chronicles Kevin’s personal journey and the ripple effect it has on those who have been impacted by his suicide attempt and his life's work since. In addition, the film highlights the stories of individuals and families who are utilizing their personal tragedy to bring hope and healing to others.

From the safety within a stretch circle of a suburban soccer team, nine young women navigate big questions and wage tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. Sarah DeLappe’s “The Wolves” is a portrait of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for a group of American girls who just want to score some goals.

“The Wolves” was the recipient of the American Playwriting Foundation’s inaugural Relentless Award, the 2017 Obie Award for Ensemble work presented by the American Theatre Wing, and it was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

DeLappe's play is new and exciting and follows a group of young women on the verge of adulthood—a topic not widely addressed in theater,” said director Joe Maniglia.  “It gives a fly-on-the-wall perspective of their likes, loves, and losses through the lens of feminine adolescence.”

This production contains strong language and mature themes and is not appropriate for children or sensitive patrons.

“If we've done our job right, half the audience will walk away saying, ‘Wow, I had no idea!’ and the other half will say, ‘Thank you for giving voice to what I'm feeling’, said assistant director Ashley Fredrickson, an NAU theatre performance major.

The cast of 10, stage manager, and lighting designer is all-female.
