Join Flagstaff Arts Council for a 6 week Long- Form Improv Workshop with Garrison Garcia in 2020! Garrison’s passion for performing started at childhood with a living room magic show and might have peaked with his role of “Toy Soldier #3” in a community production of The Velveteen Rabbit. As a graduate student, he performed with NAU’s improv troupe, NAUghty Bits. Currently, Garrison can be found writing sketches, scripts, and cultivating local talent for The Foundry, Flagstaff’s only monthly, community variety show. Garrison is the founding member and creative director of Flagstaff’s premier improv comedy team, Tiny Punches. By “yes, and”-ing the offers life gives him, Garrison has discovered a passion for directing improv workshops and trainings and he firmly believes that anyone can do improv.
This workshop is designed to provide the participant with a thorough overview and foundational knowledge of longform improvisation concepts. Essential for beginners and experienced players alike, learners can expect a highly participatory and interactive experience, culminating in a student show. Concepts covered include creating a base reality, finding and playing game, character and scene work, and using openings to initiate scenes. No prior experience is necessary for enrollment in this workshop, only a willingness to try new things in a supportive and encouraging environment. After completing this workshop, individuals from varied backgrounds have commented about their improved ability to think on their feet, the greater sense of confidence they have in group interactions and public speaking, and the extremely positive experience of laughing for two hours straight each week.

Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music present
Tim O’Brien with Jan Fabricius
Born in Wheeling, West Virginia on March 16, 1954, Grammy winning singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist Tim O’Brien grew up singing in church and in school. Gaining attention in the 1980’s with Colorado’s Hot Rize, O’Brien scored a country hit with Kathy Mattea’s cover of his song Walk The Way The Wind Blows in 1986. Soon artists like Nickel Creek and Garth Brooks also covered his songs. Collaborators include his sister Mollie O’Brien, old time musician Dirk Powell, and songwriters Darrell Scott, Steve Earle, and Mark Knopfler. O’Brien formed his own record label, Howdy Skies Records, in 1999, and launched the digital download label Short Order Sessions (SOS) with his partner Jan Fabricius in 2015.
Notable O’Brien recordings like the bluegrass Dylan covers of Red On Blonde and the Celtic-Appalachian fusion of The Crossing led to Grammy winning CD’s Fiddler’s Green (2005) and The Earls of Leicester (2014). 2017’s Where the River Meets the Road paid tribute to the music of his native West Virginia. This year’s March 2019 release, Tim O’Brien Band, features well known players Mike Bub (bass), Shad Cobb (fiddle), and Patrick Sauber (banjo/guitar), and Jan Fabricius (vocal). Shaping Tim’s Blues, Jazz, and Celtic influences within a string band setting, they transform five originals and eight well-chosen covers into his own unique brand of bluegrass.
Tim O’Brien performs in a duet setting with his partner Jan Fabricius on harmony vocals. Featuring his solid guitar, fiddle, and mandolin, the shows cover a range of original compositions and traditional arrangements mixed with stories and Tim’s self-deprecating humor.
The show will take place on Saturday, February 29, 2019, doors are at 7pm and the show will start at 7:30pm. Tickets are $34 FFOTM Members / $36 advance/ $40 day of show.
