Surface design is one of the most universal art forms. The patterns or colors on clothing, quilts, linens, wall art, or any other textile are examples of surface design. In this process-oriented workshop, Sharon Richards will provide students with fabrics to explore many demonstrated techniques. Participants are encouraged to try all of the processes: you never know what you’ll like best!

Throughout the workshop, students will be encourage to think beyond the basics in order to create unique designs.  Participants will also be encouraged to share and talk among themselves. We will play and have fun!

Workshop Schedule

Participants will learn how to:

  • use bleach to design dark fabrics
  • make stamps from everyday items
  • use stencils for making marks on fabric
  • monoprint on fabric using paints
  • enhance surface-designed fabric with hand stitching
  • make sun prints, using transparent paints and everything from pencils to leaves for printing on fabric,  (painting the white cloth with transparent paints, placing shapes on top and watching the sun “develop” the design on the cloth)

No experience is necessary, but if you have a project in mind, Sharon can help you choose what techniques might work best. Participants need to bring a notebook, pen, basic sewing kit of needles, threads, scissors, and any natural fiber fabric that they may want to try.  Mature 12-year olds and up are appropriate. Younger students are welcome with adult supervision.

YOU-1-DSC08515fx+(2)About Sharon Richards

As a child, Sharon learned how to hand sew, sew on a machine, knit, embroider, etc. She has made her own clothing, household items, gifts, wearable art, and wall art for many years. Her present skills are a loose combination of what she learned as a child, from art workshops in design and, perhaps most important, lots of experimentation on her own. Her work is featured in local, national, and international collections. A recent collaboration with metal artist Cathi Borthwick has led to further exploration and expansion of Richards’ art.
