The Flagstaff Arts Council will host a six-week figure drawing workshop with local artist Michael Hagelberg. This 101 series is a great opportunity for students to draw from a live model in the main gallery at the Coconino Center for the Arts.


Figure drawing basics, with some additions for advanced students. Sessions are as follows:

Gesture and line
how to start, stress and action, major forms, limb direction;
advanced: hard and soft edges, intersections, volume

horizontal and vertical alignment, plotting points and planes, generalized anatomy and proportion guidelines;
advanced: more on line—edges, intersections, straight and curved;

Geometry and visual envelope
alignment and angles, relative position, anatomical landmarks;
advanced: negative space, visual envelope

Masses and foreshortening
major masses and volumes in space, overlap and perspective;
advanced: anatomy and simplifications, balance

Light and shade
dominant and reflected light, dominant masses and plane changes;
advanced: contrast and tonal key

Long pose session
The full evening to create a masterpiece
