The Flagstaff Arts Council is seeking concepts for art exhibitions in the Jewel Gallery of the Coconino Center for the Arts. Anyone with an exhibition idea can apply, however the Gallery is a small space (12’x17′) and therefore this opportunity is ideal for solo artist exhibitions.
Please read the instructions below carefully to learn the best approach to a successful application.
Who Should Apply
The Center attracts over 30,000 visitors each year; the primary reason for visits to the Center is to view art work in the two galleries. Opening Receptions often attract 300-600 people. Jewel Gallery exhibitions are always aligned chronologically with Main Gallery exhibitions so that the openings are on the same night and audiences are shared.
This opportunity is ideal for an individual artist seeking to show a small body of art work in a solo exhibition. The Jewel Gallery has also successfully hosted small group shows, where each artist is exhibiting a small body of work. Individuals or organizations may apply to guest curate an exhibition. Schools may also apply to host an exhibition during the Youth Art Exhibition in March.
About the Jewel Gallery
The Jewel Gallery is approximately 12’x17′ with 10+ feet of vertical space. The gallery is lit with halogen track lights. Pedestals of various sizes are available. Walls can be painted to suit the exhibition pending Flagstaff Arts Council approval.
The Coconino Center for the Arts is located at 2300 North Fort Valley Road (Highway 180). CCA is on the way to several Arizona attractions such as the Grand Canyon, Museum of Northern Arizona, and the Arizona Snowbowl. The facility includes a 4,000 square foot art Main Gallery and an indoor amphitheater that seats 200.
All applications for exhibitions in the Jewel Gallery must be submitted online through this website. At the bottom of this page, click on the green “Apply” button to access the application.
Please keep in mind that while the application asks several questions, your proposal does not need to be “polished,” nor does it need to answer all questions. The Arts Advisory Council, which reviews these proposals, views the Jewel Gallery as an opportunity for artists at any career stage to show their work to a sophisticated audience in Northern Arizona. The most important aspects of your application will be the quality of the art work images submitted, and the quality and appropriateness of the exhibition concept.
If you are proposing an exhibition of new art work that has not been created yet, please upload images of art work that are similar in nature to the art work to be exhibited.
If you do not have other details prepared that the application asks for, simply answer that question with “to be determined.” This will not hurt your chances of success. Again, it is most important that you provide quality images, a quality description of the exhibition concept, and the types of art work to be shown.
A volunteer group of artists and arts professionals, the Arts Advisory Council, reviews all proposals and makes recommendations to Arts Council staff. They consider the following criteria below as their primary guide for decisions. However, other factors may contribute to final decisions.
Quality of Art Work Images Presented
Quality of Exhibition Concept
Appropriateness of Exhibition for the Center and Northern Arizona
Ability of the Applicant to Complete the Exhibition Successfully
Budget and Projected Costs
Deadline to apply online: June 21, 2019
Notification to applicants: no later than July 22, 2019
Exhibitions typically are open to the public between five and ten weeks. Applications considered in this round are for Jewel Gallery exhibitions that will be scheduled in these available time slots:
March/ April 2020
May/June/ July 2020
2021 and beyond
Applicants must be willing to collaborate with an Arts Council curation staff on the execution of their exhibition. The curation staff will assist accepted applicants with exhibition concept, selection of art work and layout of the exhibition. The curation staff is primarily responsible for installation of the exhibition, however, applicants may propose to handle the installation.
Art work to be displayed in the Jewel Gallery must be delivered ready to hang or display. It is the responsibility of the artist to cover costs associated with framing or preparation of art work and insurance to and from the Center.
Costs associated with installation materials and equipment (paint, fixtures, lighting, labels, etc.), opening reception, events, and marketing are typically covered by the Flagstaff Arts Council. The applicant is typically expected to cover costs for shipping of art work or any extemporaneous costs, however we will consider requests for the Arts Council to incur these costs. If an applicant has a funding source to assist with exhibition costs, this is considered helpful but is not a necessity for a successful application.
To assist with a small portion of the costs associated with processing applications, a $25 application fee for Flagstaff Arts Council Members and a $35 application fee for Non-Members is required to be paid with each corresponding application. When you complete your application and click the “Submit and Pay” button, you will be taken to PayPal where you can pay with a credit card.
