Flagstaff Arts Council is pleased to present two innovative workshops led by Garrison Garcia in 2019: Long-Form Improv Comedy beginning Tuesday, January 9th and Theater of the Oppressed starting Friday, February 1st. These sessions will be held at the Coconino Center for the Arts.
Instructor Garrison Garcia’s passion for performing started at childhood with a living room magic show and led him to perform with NAU’s improv troupe, NAUghty Bits asa graduate student. Currently, Garrison is the founder of The Foundry, Flagstaff’s only monthly, community variety show. Additionally, Garrison is the founding member and creative director of Flagstaff’s premier improv comedy team, Tiny Punches.
- The weekly Long-Form Improv Comedy workshop will provide participants with six weeks of thorough overview and foundational knowledge of longform improvisation concepts. Essential for beginners and experienced players alike, learners can expect a highly participatory and interactive experience, culminating in a student show. Concepts covered include creating a base reality, finding and playing game, character and scene work, and using openings to initiate scenes. No prior experience is necessary for enrollment in this workshop, only a willingness to try new things in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Dates: Tuesday’s January 29- March 5, 2019
*Student Showcase: Friday, March 8, 2019
- Theater of the Oppressed is a two-weekend acting intensive workshop involving six sessions on February 1-3 and 8-10, 2019. Participants will explore and experiment with dynamics of systemic power and oppression through theater and improvisation. Theater of the Oppressed takes a unique approach to creating plays: the intention is to leave the scene unresolved and incomplete. The audience should be left with questions after watching the play, pondering, “What would I do in that situation?” and “How would I navigate those circumstances differently?”
