NightVisions VII Call for Entries
More than two-thirds of Americans live where they can no longer see the Milky Way galaxy because of light pollution. We have grown so isolated from night that in much of our culture it has become alien and fearful. NightVisions VII seeks to re-open our positive connections to the natural night and to bridge the divide separating artistic from scientific perception, promoting the idea that science and art are two intertwined aspects of human experience.
In other words, NightVisions is an art exhibition that celebrates the beauty of the night sky. The exhibition is hosted at the Coconino Center for the Arts in Flagstaff, Arizona. Flagstaff was designated as the world’s first International Dark Skies City, enacting limitations on light pollution to preserve the community’s exquisite view of the night sky, and leading a worldwide movement.
Showing for the seventh time, this international, juried, biennial exhibition is open to all artists 18 years of age or older, and to artwork in any media; 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, poetry, photography, video, installation, etc. The exhibition is produced by the Flagstaff Arts Council in partnership with the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition.
The application deadline is February 12, 2019.
About the Exhibition Venue
The Coconino Center for the Arts (CCA) is located at 2300 North Fort Valley Road (Highway 180). CCA is on the way to several Arizona attractions such as the Grand Canyon, Museum of Northern Arizona, and the Arizona Snowbowl. The facility includes a 4,000 square foot art Main Gallery and an indoor amphitheater that seats 200. NightVisions will be in the Main Gallery.

- Delivery of work: March 26-29, 2019
- Installation: April 1-12, 2019
- Members’ Reception: Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 5 p.m. / Public Reception at 6 p.m.
- Exhibition Open: April 16 – June 1, 2019, Tue-Sat, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Art work pick up: June 3-4, 2018
- Shipped work sent back to artists: by June 7, 2018
- A $35 entry fee (fee is discounted for Arts Council members to $25) covers the submission of up to three works of art.
- Shipping costs and insurance to and from the exhibition are the responsibility of the artist; however, a limited number of shipping reimbursements of up to $100 are available. Insurance on the shipped work is the responsibility of the artist. Shipped work must make use of a sturdy, reusable container suitable for this purpose. The Arts Council provides insurance for artwork in its possession.
- Artwork must be ready to hang and display. The artist should include specific instructions for any unusual display methods.
- All artwork must remain on display throughout the duration of the exhibit.
- Artwork accepted will be considered ‘on loan’ during the exhibition, covered by Arts Council insurance, subject to Arts Council policies, and available for sale at the artist’s request on a consignment basis (70% to artist, 30% to venue).
- Artwork that has been displayed at the Coconino Center for the Arts or in other galleries in Coconino County in the past will not be considered.
Work will be juried blind from digital images; the jurors will not know the name of the artist when selecting artwork. Up to three images (one full and two details) per work may be submitted. Digital images must be a minimum of 300 dpi, 5”x7” (although larger is preferred). Any accepted artwork that differs markedly from submitted images may not be installed in the exhibition (subject to staff/juror discretion).
Art works will be considered for acceptance into the exhibition by jurors according to two primary criteria: 1) excellence in artistic quality, and 2) suitability and unification with the stated exhibition theme.
Jury prizes will be awarded for Best of Show ($1000), Second Place ($500), and Third Place ($250). The Coalition will award a People’s Choice award ($200) after the opening reception. Prize winning works will be announced at the opening reception on April 13, 2019.
Debra Edgerton is a Senior Lecturer for the School of Art at Northern Arizona University. She is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and lifetime member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Her recent watercolor paintings have received numerous awards and has been on exhibit locally, nationally, and internationally. Last spring, Ms. Edgerton was awarded Master Status through TWSA.
Chris Luginbuhl is an astronomer, author, photographer, dark sky advocate and originator of the Celebration of the Night and NightVisions.
Arline Martens is an award-winning fiber artist, having won Best of Show and People’s Choice in several exhibits, including NightVisions and It’s Elemental. She’s been a fiber artist for more than twenty years, creating images from the natural and celestial worlds. Her work allows her to constantly explore new concepts and images using a variety of techniques, inviting the viewer to see nature and the night sky in diverse ways. The night sky is often a dominant subject in Martens’ fabric interpretations, where she strives to impart a sense of wonder and mystery to the viewer.
