Nominations for the 2019 Viola Awards are open now! The Viola Awards are Flagstaff’s Oscars for the arts and sciences community. Celebrating excellence in the arts and sciences, the Viola Awards recognize artists, educators, organizations and leaders who make positive contributions to the arts and sciences in Flagstaff. If you want to add someone for consideration, the deadline to send us your recommendations is November 26, 2018.
We invite you to submit nominations based on what work demonstrated excellence in 2018. Don’t worry about getting the category right. Think about what you experienced in 2018: performances, art exhibitions, music, books, film, science and arts educators, and/or individual artists’ work and then submit your nomination(s)!

The process for our staff and volunteers is a huge undertaking. All submissions that are sent to us are thoroughly researched so that we can present complete information about projects and potential finalists to a group of panelists, made up of artists, educators, experts and past Viola winners. The Panels (different people serve on different panels, by category) review all of the compiled information. They meet, discuss the merits of each potential project or individual, and ultimately decide who will be official finalists. We seek to have between three to five finalists in each category. So, it is important to note that not all community nomination submissions become official finalists.
Finally, the Panel meets again after nominees have been announced and discusses the merits of the finalists. In what is often an agonizing decision due to the quality and talent , they choose a winner. All the winners are then announced for the first time at the Gala event in March.
The 2019 Viola Awards Gala will be held on Saturday, March 2.
