The Flagstaff Arts Council is excited to host a full slate of Summer 2018 Art Workshops at the Coconino Center for the Arts. The summer series kicks off on May 26th and continue through August 27, 2018. The classes offer artists of all abilities to come together and experiment with different mediums with the support and instruction of professional local artists. The full summer schedule is listed below.


Intro to Bookmaking
May 26 | 
9 am – 12:00 pm 

In this half day workshop participants have the opportunity to create two books, an Accordion book and a Japanese Stab book.  Attendees will be introduced to the materials, tools, and techniques required to create their own 4″ x 5″ Accordion Book and 5″ x 8″ Japanese Stab book. For Arts Council members, the pricing is $63. For General participants, this workshop is $70. More info>

 


 

Astrophotography
June 8 | 
5:30 pm – 10:00 pm 

Learn Astrophotography with local photographer Abe Snider. We will discuss how to find a dark sky area and preparing for the shot, an overview of camera and lens settings, how to focus a lens in the dark and recommendations for framing a capture. There will be a demo on a typical night sky edit as well as a look at exposure blending. For Arts Council members, the pricing is $70. Summer Figure Drawing Sessions
Mondays June 11 – Aug 27 | 6:00 – 7:00 pm 

Artists may draw from a live model in the main gallery at the Coconino Center for the Arts. This opportunity is for those artists who would like to draw or create using the model as inspiration but do not wish to have instruction. For Arts Council Members, all 12 sessions are $175, 4 sessions are $65, and per session is $18. For General pricing, 12 sessions are $200, 4 sessions is $75, and per session is $20. More info>

 


 

Figure Drawing 101
Tuesdays June 26 – July 30 | 6:00 – 9:00 pm 

Under the direction of local artist Michael Hagelberg, these Figure Drawing 101 lessons will cover figure drawing basics such as gesture and line, geometry and visual envelope, and light and shade. All are welcome to attend, regardless of ability. Pricing for this six-week workshop is $135 for Arts Council members and $145 for General participants. More info>

 


 

Intro to Felting
July 14 | 
10:00 am – 5:00 pm 

Experience fiber alchemy as soft fluffy wool transforms into thick sturdy fabric. We’ll start with the basics, making 2D felt coasters in the morning, and then creating seamless 3D vessels in the afternoon. Along the way we’ll experiment with color and design in felt. Pricing is $62 for Arts Council members and $70 for General participants. There is also a materials fee of $15 which covers all the wool for class and all the tools you will need. More info>

 

 


 

Modern Free-Form Embroidery
August 18 | 
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm 

Learn to embroider your jeans, your knitting, and anything else you’d like to stitch on! We’ll explore crewel and sashiko styles in this workshop focused on free-form embroidery with thread and wool yarn. Sample different techniques and materials, and learn tips for planning and transferring designs. Prices are $52 for Arts Council Members and $60 general. There is also a materials fee of $15 that includes felt, yarn, and needles. More info>
