2018 Viola Award Finalist for Excellence in Performing Arts
Running throughout the month of August, local theater troop, Theatrikos presented the Tony Award winning musical Avenue Q. Winning the Tony “Triple Crown” for Best
Musical, Best Score and Best Book, Avenue Q is a puppet-packed, adults only and hilariously funny look into the life of a recent college graduate named Princeton.
The laugh-out-loud musical tells the story of a recent college graduate named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it’s clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.
Directed by Theatrikos veterans John Propster and Jan Rominger this production showcases a cast of 14 of Flagstaff’s great theater talents. Avenue Q is a production suited for adult audiences as it deals with topics such as “puppet sex” and other. The cast and crew was comprised of new members as well as people that have been with the theater for years. Both directors had nothing but praise for their cast and commenting on how supportive the cast was of one another and how fun they were to direct.
The cast members are volunteers who take time out of their busy lives to attend rehearsals Monday through Thursday nights and prepare an entertaining performance for the Flagstaff community. Even the set is built and painted completely by volunteers — a shabby, two-story brick apartment building creates the scene on Avenue Q where Princeton and his friends live.
