2018 Viola Award Finalist for Excellence in Performing Arts

Dark Sky Aerial, fresh off their Viola Award winning production of Opia, presented TILT in downtown Flagstaff last summer.

In the ambitious and powerful ambulatory, theatre experience, aerial dancers soared off the walls of downtown buildings, were hoisted-on-high by a construction crane, and wove a tale of truth and perception through the hallways and hotel rooms of The Historic Hotel Monte Vista for a three-night run on August 17th, 18th, and 19th, 2017.

Dark Sky Aerial is a cutting-edge, aerial theatre and performance art company based in Flagstaff, Arizona. The 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is dedicated to creating thought-provoking repertory work, connecting the audience to their humanity. Dark Sky Aerial is a dream realized by five women: Abby Chan, Carrie Gaydos, Elisa Venezia, Isabelle Dove-Robinson and Joan Garcia.

From the nomination letter:

Dark Sky Aerial’s performance “TILT: Truth is a Vantage Point” was truly the first performance of its kind in Flagstaff. The innovative use of building space as artistic canvas and construction equipment as artistic medium was like nothing ever seen before in Flagstaff. More over, TILT brought together performing artists of every kind in a way I have never seen – not even in the highest budget productions in the biggest cities.

Raves from the community:

“Tilt was unlike anything I had ever seen before. It was an ambitious production that moved the audience through a number of stages in downtown Flagstaff — from the exterior walls of the Sunwest building, through an alley, into the intimate spaces of the Monte Vista hotel, and finally onto the roof of the hotel. The performance invited the audience to examine assumptions and the ways in which we are cruel to ourselves. The performance was powerful and I loved the ways in which the performers used the streets of Flagstaff as a stage, allowing the general public an opportunity to experience the high-flying beauty of the harness dancers on the building and dangling from a crane high above the Monte Vista. I am having a hard time explaining this breath-taking performance.”

“I wish I had more time to describe the magnitude of creative and collaborative effort Dark Sky Aerial brings to our community but my wife is in labor right now. Just know I saw “Tilt” and it was a powerful experience!”
