Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle

Here is your weekly update of coming events by Executive Director, J.T. Tannous:

My favorite month in Flagstaff is September. Mix cool crisp mornings with sunny warm afternoons, and add in some of the best festivals and annual events all year, plus leaves turning and the sun beginning to cast an orange glow – that is the recipe for greatness. Ironically, I’m out of Flagstaff for two weeks this month, which never happens. Sigh…

Let’s start the Labor Day weekend festivities on Thursday night with the power duo of Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle out at the Pepsi Amphitheatre at Fort Tuthill. Given their backgrounds separately as singer songwriters in folk music and more, they are a perfect blend to team up for a tour of shows. For another folksy kick of live music, be sure to check out the Honey Dewdrops at the Arboretum at Flagstaff on Saturday.

Of course, it’s also ArtWalk week. On First Friday September 2, downtown Flagstaff will be bustling with new shows by local artists, live music, and merriment on the streets. It’s the final summer ArtWalk, so don’t miss out! And if you want even more art, check out the Labor Day Weekend Art in the Park fair at Wheeler Park.

That’s already four major events and I haven’t come yet to arguably the biggest event of the weekend: the Coconino County Fair. For four days, Fort Tuthill will be transformed into a celebration of local community, strange fried foods, and carnival rides for both the young and thrill-seeking.

In other goings-on, the Beasley Gallery at NAU has a blank wall for you to go and make art on. The Wall Draw opens September 1 – you can go and add to a collective artistic creation throughout the month. Also, TheatriKIDS continues its second and final weekend of West Side Story.
