TOFlogoSummer is almost over? Inconceivable! Even though that word may not mean what I think it means, the end of August is by no means the end of summer in Flagstaff. Not only does September offer the best weather of the year, but it’s chock full of some of the best cultural events in town.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. August has one last big hurrah, and it begins with the 19th annual Flagstaff Open Studios. Pick up the map for the event and head out to visit dozens of artist studios to see some of the best art Flagstaff has to offer. Let me say it again: please go out and support local artists!

If you’re in for thrills, check out Thunder Over Flagstaff. The thunder in the title refers to all the amazing old airplanes, from antiques to war birds and more, that will be on display at this event. Plus they are offering free plane rides to kids.

WSSTheatriKIDS opens West Side Story this weekend. The young actors in that program have serious chops, so it comes highly recommended. Riordan Mansion has a lecture Saturday night, and the title alone should intrigue you: Mayhem, Death and Destruction on the Movie Set. And The Road Ahead has its public Opening Reception Saturday night, which you may have heard me talking about just a little bit.

I do not mean to pry, but you don’t by any chance happen to have six fingers on your right hand? No, I don’t always begin conversations that way, but I do when The Princess Freaking Bride is playing for Movies on the Square.

Other fun bits: There is a Blacksmithing Workshop Saturday morning at Pioneer Museum. This weekend is your last chance to see Viola Award winning exhibition, Aphasia: Neurological Disorder in Text and Image at the Riles building on NAU’s campus. And a tip of the hat to the College of Arts & Letters at NAU, which begins another great season of the CAL Film Series on Tuesday, August 30, with the Charlie Chaplin film, The Circus.

There are many more happenings in Flagstaff over the weekend – live music, markets, bird walks, and more – so get out there and experience this amazing town! Check out Flagstaff365.com for the full listing of upcoming events, plus details about all the events I’ve listed herein.
