Rob Zappanti’s Groucho Marx as a Sock Monkey in the Road Ahead
Here is your weekly recap of upcoming events by Executive Director John Tannous:
Things are supposed to quiet down in Flagstaff during the weeks between the first day of K-12 school and the start of school at Northern Arizona University. But that’s just not the case anymore. Flagstaff isn’t your father’s sleepy little town. Art and culture are part of the everyday fabric of our community, and no weekend is a void.
A big part of that fabric are the many adults with developmental disabilities who live in Flagstaff, but often go unnoticed. Well, this weekend, they’ll be in the spotlight, as The Road Ahead opens with a special members’ preview at the Coconino Center for the Arts on Saturday. The new art exhibition features art by adults with developmental disabilities from the Hozhoni Foundation in Flagstaff and three other similar programs in San Diego, South Dakota, and Chicago.
The Orpheum Theater will be shutting down the block to celebrate their birthday, but it’s a party where you get all the presents. Their 99th Anniversary Block Party features live music, a classic VW car show, kids’ zone, food, beer, and more, with Commander Cody as the featured concert that night. Also on Saturday is the annual Climb to Conquer Cancer, where hundreds of participants will be heading up to Arizona Snowbowl by foot. The Symphony Guild will be hosting their Home Tour on Saturday, too.
If you’re looking for events that include the kiddos, the Children’s Music & Art Festival is set for Saturday at Bushmaster Park. And that evening, Movies on the Square is showing The Goonies! Seriously, it’s The Goonies. You have to be there just to see Chunk do the Truffle Shuffle again.
As always, there are a LOT more events, venues and fun to be had out there. I simply can’t list them all. But Flagstaff365 CAN list them all and does. So check out that site, and be sure to have an art-filled weekend!
