The Framing Department at Hidden Light started in 2001 by owners Stephen Saunders and Corey Allen. The business focuses on hand-made photographic prints made in a wet darkroom, a rarity in today’s digital world. They also provide framing and installation work, serving many of Flagstaff’s best known artists.
Hidden Light specializes in traditional black and white photography developed in a wet darkroom, and palladium/platinum prints, dry mounting, matte cutting, a full retail frame business, custom framing, mounting to metal, glass, retail picture framing, commercial installations, and coordinating photographers for exhibitions.
No business is more consistently recommended and applauded by local artists in the community than Hidden Light. Their clients are invited to come into the darkroom and work with them, thereby learning about a process that only a handful of people still specialize in. Hidden Light works directly with the artists in the darkrooms making the final product fit what the artist wants, together creating a “hand-crafted print.”
They also give back to the community. Co-owner Corey Allen is President of the Board of Pine Forest Charter School and has helped the school in their move and expansion. Co-owner Stephen Saunders previously served on the Board of the Flagstaff Arts Council. Hidden Light sponsors many art and culture programs in the community, including the Sound of Flight mural, art exhibitions at the Coconino Center for the Arts, Flagstaff Open Studios, and a whole lot more.
From a patron and nominator:
“The fine people at Hidden Light and the Framing Department at Hidden Light are excellent at providing services for photographers and visual artists. They are also one of the biggest supporters of the arts, performing, visual. etc. in town. They generously donate their time and help finance some of Flagstaff’s outstanding public art such as the Sound of Flight Mural.”
