The new Fires of Change exhibition opens with a preview reception for Arts Council members on Thursday, September 3, 2015. At 5pm, there is an Artist Talk and poetry reading from exhibition artist Julie Comnick and poet David Chorlton. The reception begins at 6pm.
Fires of Change is a Joint Fire Science Program and NEA-funded art exhibition at the Coconino Center for the Arts which will run September 5 – October 31. The exhibition explores, through the eyes of artists, the increase in severity, size and number of wildfires in the Southwest and their impact on the landscape and communities.
“This exhibition is our most ambitious of the past ten years,” says John Tannous, Executive Director of the Arts Council. “The depth and stories behind each of work of art provides an exhibition experience that is rich and layered, and will take time to fully appreciate. We hope our patrons will come back for repeat viewings.”
The participating artists were invited for their unique perspectives, experience and talent. In order to show art in the exhibition, the artists had to participate in a Fire Science Bootcamp, spending a week in the forests of Northern Arizona in late 2014. A team of top-notch fire scientists and managers provided the eleven invited artists education and training on the impact of wildfire in Northern Arizona in preparation for the September 2015 exhibition.
