For the upcoming Fires of Change exhibition, artists invited to participate had to attend a week-long Fire Science Boot Camp in the fall of 2014. For a full week, they visited and camped in the forests of Northern Arizona, learning from firefighters, land managers and scientists. They learned about forest ecology, and how fire plays into the life cycle of the forest. From this experience, they applied what they learned to the art they made for Fires of Change.
Nine of our eleven artists in Fires of Change have written about their approach to their art in the exhibition. These writings have all been compiled in one place: the Fires of Change Blog. Learn how each artist approached this unique exhibition and opportunity.
Fires of Change is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Joint Fire Science Program. Our partners on the exhibition are the Landscape Conservation Initiative and the Southwest Fire Science Consortium.
