FSO

From Flag Live, October 23, 2014

The annual FSO Halloween costume concert was performed on October 24, 2014. Artwork by Flagstaff students added a dynamic visual accompaniment to Berlioz’s visionary Symphonie fantastique. The music performed was:

  • Liszt Mephisto Waltz No. 1
  • Dvořák The Midday Witch, Op. 108
  • Berlioz Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14

From the nomination letter:

Artwork by Flagstaff students adds a dynamic visual accompaniment to Berlioz’s visionary Symphonie fantastique.

Last night I saw one of the best collaborations ever in Flagstaff!  There are a lot of people involved in this project. They all worked very hard as you could tell from the resulting performance!

Spearheaded by Elizabeth Schulze, she worked with 3 art teachers from 3 different high schools:
Chandra Hemminger, Summit High School
Janeece Henes, Flagstaff Arts and Leadership
Joe Cornett, Flagstaff High School

In the spring of 2014 Elizabeth brought the idea to them about collaborating in the Halloween concert.
Comprised of the artwork of 60 students set to the music of Berlioz Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14. Each of the 5 movements were finely choreographed with the images being shown on a screen behind the orchestra. Timed and picked and placed at the right moment through out the piece. The students listened to the piece and created paintings, photos, videos, drawings from what the music inspired in them. They were not told the story of the Symphonie Fantastique, but were ask to respond from their own heart and soul, what it meant to them as an individual.

What unfolded before the audience was journey of sight and sound in beautiful syncopation. This was a labor of love for these teachers. Prior to the performance the Chandra, Janeece, Joe, and 2 students sat with Elizabeth on stage to speak about the project. Elizabeth is not only an amazing conductor, but a passionate teacher. With every performance she is so energized and happy to educate the audience about the back story of each piece. She is a true asset to this community and the best thing to every happen to the Flagstaff Symphony!
